High-voltage motor soft-start device (UPPVE)

High-voltage motor soft-start device (UPPVE) provides a soft start of high-voltage synchronous and induction motors of pumps, compressors, fans, air blowers and other manufacturing machinery.

Soft start of the high-voltage motor is achieved by forming a preset tempo of the motor voltage buildup from zero to the rated value.

Soft start control system of the UPPVE device provides a soft start of the motor under the microcontroller control. This excludes emergencies associated with erroneous personnel actions while start and stop the high-voltage motor by UPPVE device.
 

Application of the UPPVE device provides the following advantages::

  • considerable reduction of the motor starter current (3-4 times)
  • significant decrease of the dynamic loads at the motor bearing and kinematics of the machinery operating with the motor;
  • quality improvement of the electrical equipment operating conditions (motors, transformers, switching units, etc.);
  • significant reduction of the electric energy losses in electric equipment by the motor start;
  • decrease of the mains voltage sagging by the motor start
  • energy saving by means of rational use of the energy-intensive equipment;
  • equipment reliability and operation period increase;
  • increase of the admissible start number.
  • Motor start with limited power sources.

The following main protection types are realized in the device:

  • overcurrent protection;
  • from the protracted motor starting;
  • mains phase break protection;
  • mains undervoltage protection;
  • UPPVE ventilation collapse protection;
  • thyristor overvoltage protection.

Protection operations and other system troubles are shown on the inbuilt LCD screen of the UPPVE soft-start device.

UPPVE1 6-1250-3 UXL4 The soft starter for high-voltage motors with a rated voltage of the main circuit 6 kV with a maximum inrush current 1250 A, intended to alternately start 3 engines.

UPPVE1 10-400- UXL4  The soft starter high-voltage motors with a rated voltage of the main circuit 10 kV, with a maximum inrush current 400 A, with a bypass contactor, designed to run a single motor.

Note: In brackets is the data for motors with voltage 10kV. Motor maximum capacity is taken when divisible factor ~ 3, which is equal to the device nominal current. Nominal maximum current within the rated starting time 90 s is taken as the nominal current of soft-start device UPPVE.

On the basis of UPPVE series devices systems of successive soft start of a motor group (2 10 pcs) are produced. They comprise cabinet UPPVE, chambers with high-voltage contactors (the chamber number is equal to the soft-start motors), a control cabinet and control panel.

When the motors are powered by two terminals, the system of successive soft start are complemented by two chambers with high-voltage main circuit breakers, by means of which the UPPVE cabinet is connected to the supply terminal. In this case the vacuum circuit breaker is not built in the UPPVE cabinet. See figure 1.

When the motors are powered by one terminal and have a soft start of one motor, an automatic relaying vacuum circuit breaker is built in the UPPVE device. In this case the chambers with high-voltage main circuit breakers, that supply the UPPVE soft-start device, are not installed. The UPPVE device protection is performed by the microprocessor protection unit of the inbuilt high-voltage disconnecting switch. See figure 2.

Maximum economic benefit is achieved by application of the system of the motor group successive soft start by means of one UPPVE device. An example of this system of soft successive start of 6 motors on the basis of the UPPVE soft-start device is shown in figure 1.

Structure

Control cabinets ()

Two types of control cabinets are produced depending on the requirements to the system of the motor group soft-start.

Type 1. Simplified small-size control cabinet () with a relay scheme of the automatics. It is constructionally designed as an attached control cabinet with overall dimensions 500 x 300 x 200 mm. Number of controlled motors 3 max.

Type 2. Simplified small-size control cabinet () with a relay scheme of the automatics. It is constructionally designed as an attached control cabinet with overall dimensions 600 x 400 x 200 mm. Number of controlled motors 6 max.

Control panels

Two types of control panels are produced depending on the requirements to the system of the motor group soft-start.

Type 1. Simplified small-size control panel without a communication channel with upper-level system. It is constructionally designed as an attached control panel with overall dimensions 420 x 400 x 280 mm. Number of controlled motors 3. Type 2. Number of controlled motors 6.

Chamber with contactor

Chamber with a high-voltage vacuum contactor or high-voltage main circuit breaker. The type of the high-voltage chambers is selected by the Customer. Overall dimentions of type -202 (WxHxD = 750x650x1340 mm)

The price of the system of high-voltage motor soft-start by cabinet UPPVE is several times lower than that of an analogue system with a frequency converter.
